In this post we are describing about one of the famous festival of Nepal ‘Teej‘.
Teej is a very famous festival in Nepal, this is commonly celebrated by Hindu women. It is observed in honour of the goddess Parvati and her union with Lord Shiva. The festival is deeply rooted in Nepalese culture and traditions, reflecting the importance of marital happiness, well-being of spouses, and purification of the body and soul.
History and Origins of Teej
Teej has its origins in the mythology surrounding the goddess Parvati. According to legend, Parvati undertook severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Her perseverance and devotion were eventually rewarded when Shiva accepted her as his wife. This story symbolizes the virtues of devotion, sacrifice, and the power of prayer, which are central themes of the festival.
Teej is generally celebrated over three days, with each day having its distinct rituals:
- Dar Khane Din (Feast Day): The festivities begin with a grand feast hosted by the women’s natal families. This day is marked by the consumption of various delicacies, symbolising abundance and prosperity. Women gather, sing traditional songs, and dance, expressing their joy and the bond of sisterhood.
- Vrat (Fasting) Day: The second day is the most important, as women observe a strict fast, often without water (nirjala vrat), to pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Unmarried women also participate, seeking a good husband in the future. The day is spent in prayer, visiting temples, particularly those dedicated to Lord Shiva, and participating in religious rituals.
- Rishi Panchami: The third day is dedicated to the worship of the Saptarishi (seven sages) and is a day of purification. Women take a ritual bath with special mud and herbs, and perform prayers to cleanse themselves of any sins. This day emphasises the spiritual aspect of the festival, focusing on atonement and renewal.
Teej festival is a very famous and beautiful festival of Hindu women. This is a very nice festival.
